MotoGP Catalunya: Rins tops FP3 as pace heats up

Factory Ecstar Suzuki MotoGP rider Alex Rins topped a red hot morning FP3 session, which saw the top 17 riders all covered by less than a second at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Early lap times from Marquez and Quartararo showed the track was in a good condition this morning. After thirty minutes of experimenting, the final ten minutes saw the session fire into life with all riders turning their attention to a Q2 spot.

Fabio Quartararo was the first man to set a series of flying laps on soft front and rear Michelin tyres, before seeing Alex Rins go fastest on a medium front and rear combination, with a 1:39.547.

Quartararo continued to improve before suffering his first crash since joining MotoGP, losing the front end of his Yamaha in the flip-flop turn two.

Late laps from Cal Crutchlow, Valentino Rossi, Maverick Vinales and Andrea Dovizioso saw the cream rise to the top in the dying seconds, all booking their spots in Q2, with less than a tenth covering the LCR Honda man down to Dovizioso.

Pol Espargaro continued his stellar form on the Red Bull factory KTM in seventh place, ahead of Mugello winner Danilo Petrucci.

It was a strange session on what has been a strange weekend for Marc Marquez who was ninth fastest, but could never settle into a good rhythm. The World Championship leader was held up by his factory Repsol Honda team mate on his final lap, prompting some arm waving and head pointing, however Marquez will be hoping to find some pace before the afternoon. Meanwhile Lorenzo rounded out the top ten, finding himself in Q2 for the second time this year.

Jack Miller was ‘best of the rest’ in eleventh place, ahead of Taka Nakagami and Franco Morbidelli who suffered a horrible looking high side before his final run. The Italian was stretchered away and taken to the medical centre, however was given the all clear for the afternoon.

Joan Mir was fourteenth and just ahead of the Aprilia duo of Aleix Espargaro and Andrea Iannone with another crasher in Pecco Bagnaia in MotoGP Catalunya: Rins tops FP3 as pace heats up seventeenth, rounding out the ‘within a second’ group.
