MotoGP Catalunya: Vinales slams Lorenzo for ‘rookie’ error

Monster Energy factory Yamaha rider Maverick Vinales launched a scathing attack on Jorge Lorenzo after the Spaniard’s mistake saw his Honda take not only Maverick Vinales, but also Andrea Dovizioso and Valentino Rossi on just the second lap of the race.

Lorenzo enjoyed his best start to a race in 2019 and halfway around the second lap the Spaniard was attempting to make a move under Vinales into the slow right handed turn ten.

Lorenzo lost the front end of his RC213V, taking all three riders out, leaving Repsol Honda team-mate to run away with the race victory. Vinales was fuming after his encouraging start was ruined by his compatriots’ mistake.

“I saw him on the inside I tried to avoid the crash but I think a bike touched my rear tyre and I just fly,” said the 24-year-old.

“I tried to avoid the clash but was impossible. This corner is always difficult but come on, you’re fourth in the first lap, you can overtake me on the straight, we’re slow. You only need to wait four corners to overtake me.

“Also in the warm-up lap he overtake without a reason, I didn’t understand.

I don’t know, if you ask me, it looks like a rookie mistake and he’s five-time world champion. Sometimes you have to think on the bike. Even if he is a great rider, he has a lot of talent but come on, you can’t win the race in two laps.”

When asked about what a suitable punishment would be for his mistake, the factory Yamaha man said: “Last on the grid, he took out four riders.

“I hope the race direction is severe as they were with me yesterday.”
