MotoGP Jerez #2: Spanish heat leaves Vinales 'destroyed'

Maverick Vinales was left ‘destroyed’ by the heat during yesterday’s second Jerez MotoGP round which was made worse when riding in Valentino Rossi’s slipstream.

Vinales had to sit behind his Monster Yamaha team-mate for 14 laps of the Andalucian track in temperatures approaching 40°C as Rossi was too strong on the brakes and it was only a late error by the 41 year old that allowed Vinales through.

“In this race it was impossible to breathe. First of all, in the first lap I tried to overtake Fabio on the first lap to take the free air because I felt very strong with the bike,” said Vinales, speaking at the track

“But then I go wide and Vale overtook me. So, I could not do anything. Then I was stuck behind Vale. I could not breathe most of the laps, I was destroyed.

“I don’t know why, maybe the heat from the other bike. But I was completely done today, I could not do more.

“I was saving maybe for the last five laps and I push at the end, went on a good rhythm again.

“Today I missed the first corner, if not then I think it would have been a different race.”
