MotoGP Jerez: Dalla Porta snatches maiden Moto3 pole

Leopard Moto3 rider Lorenzo Dalla Porta claimed his maiden pole position from Tatsuki Suzuki and Celestino Vietti around Jerez.

After a disappointing showing in Austin last time out, Dalla Porta responded perfectly in the first European race of the season with a stunning late lap time. A broken transponder on his Leopard bike meant his lap time snuck up, but just before the chequered flag was flown, the Italian posted a 1:60.011, to snatch the pole position from the Japanese rider by just 0.004 seconds. Vietti rounded out the front row, with the Italian benefitting from the extra fifteen minutes by coming through Q1.

Nico Antonelli heads the second row, however, he will be disappointed he couldn’t take the pole position after a huge mistake at the final corner. Nearly half a second up, the Italian very nearly catapulted himself off of his SIC58 Squadra Corse Honda, only to save it at the final moment.

Dennis Foggia was fifth with new lap-record holder Gabi Rodrigo in sixth place. A mechanical issue on his second run prevented him from improving on his time, leaving him down on the third row. Local rider Marcos Ramirez was eighth with the returning Albert Arenas in ninth place.

Romano Fenati will start in tenth position ahead of Ayumu Sakaki and Jakub Kornfiel. Andrea Migno will head the fifth row, with John McPhee and Jaume Masia completing a very row, starting in fourteenth and fifteenth.
