Pecco Bagnaia topped the third Misano MotoGP free practice session with an outright lap record and then crashed as he ran wide at turn six.

The Pramac Ducati rider set a 1’31.127 – three-tenths inside Maverick Vinales pole lap from last weekend - but it was only just good enough to keep the Monster Yamaha rider at bay as he came in with 1’31.185 to miss out by 0.058s.

Vinales once again showed there is nothing wrong with his empty fuel tank, soft tyre pace but early in the session when he was trying to find speed with a full tank on a hard tyre, he spent a lot of time shaking his head as there was no discernable improvement.

Fabio Quartararo was faster on the hard tyre than the medium early in the session before bolting on a soft Michelin to set a 1’31.359 for third place.

Last Sunday’s winner Franky Morbidelli, who is suffering still with food poisoning, bagged fourth while Suzuki’s Joan Mir booked his place in qualifying two with his final lap - a 1’31.626.

Red Bull KTM’s Brad Binder had to rely on his 1’31.628 from yesterday to remain in the top ten as did Taka Nakagami who claimed seventh with his 1’31.630 FP2 time.

Like Mir, Valentino Rossi was another rider to leave to the last minute but the wily old fox found a 1’31.680 for eighth place.

Pol Espargaro had another crash with four minutes of the session to go and didn’t set a fast time but his lap from FP2 was enough for ninth place overall while Danilo Petrucci bit the screen for an out-of-nowhere 1’31.701 for the last automatic Q2 spot.

Bagnaia’s team-mate Jack Miller, who did no work on the soft tyre yesterday, missed a Q2 spot in 11th place as he was 0.059s slower than the burly Italian.

Johann Zarco, Aleix Espargaro - who was lapping with his brother when he crashed - Andrea Dovizoso and Miguel Oliveira, who crashed twice in the session, completed the top 15. Alex Rins is struggling down in 17th while Bradley Smith was 20th.
