MotoGP Misano: Miller chases Lorenzo for pole

Jorge Lorenzo broke the MotoGP pole position record at Misano on his way to pole position holding off the surprise package of Jack Miller.

The Factory Ducati man was fastest when testing here a couple of weeks ago carried his blistering hot form with him back to the Italian circuit to smash the pole position record. His initial fast lap of a 1:31.763 was already under the previous qualifying lap record of a 1:31.866 that is from 2016 on a medium front tyre and netted him provisional pole.

After a second run, which he aborted early, Lorenzo fitted a new soft front tyre, which helped front end feel and saw him go a further tenth faster and end up on pole position with a 1:31.629.

The satellite Ducati of Miller will start next to Lorenzo in the middle of the front row. The Australian followed Lorenzo for part of his flying lap but went around the final sector on his own to get under the 1:32 barrier to secure a front row start on his Pramac bike.

Maverick Vinales will start from third position and the Spaniard appears to have a spring back in his step after a successful test here. A late lap saw the factory Yamaha man get his M1 into the 1:31’s with a 1:31.950 which was just 0.321 off of Lorenzo’s record time.

Andrea Dovizioso was the loser from Vinales’ late time that relegated him to the second row where Marc Marquez will join him. The World Championship leader had an eventful session. Losing the front end of his RC213V at turn fifteen, Marquez was up and running to find a scooter before he had even stopped rolling in a bid to get back to the pits and onto his second bike to get back out on track.

Marquez made it back with four minutes remaining and despite getting two laps, a mistake at turn ten on the final lap saw Marquez lose the front once again, this time the Spaniard was able to save his Repsol Honda but he couldn’t improve from his first flying lap and will start from the middle of the second row.

Cal Crutchlow was another crasher and he lost the front end of his LCR Honda in the first corner after posting his fastest lap. Fortunately the Brit walked away with nothing more than his pride harmed.

Home-town hero, Valentino Rossi could only manage the third row on his Movistar Yamaha, but the Italian will be optimistic he can fight through, providing he stays out of trouble in the opening corners.

Danilo Petrucci was start from eighth and with Johann Zarco rounding out the third row after scraping directly into Q2 this morning. Alex Rins will head the fourth row with Dani Pedrosa and Franco Morbidelli who both came through the opening Q1 session.
