MotoGP Misano Test: Bagnaia continues home run

Ducati power was back on top as MotoGP returned to the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli on Tuesday for the first of two official days of testing.

Pecco Bagnaia was back to his best as he once again topped the times at his local track with a 1’31.524 by the close of Tuesday, despite an earlier off at turn 10 after two hours of action.

Jack Miller had been in charge for much of the afternoon thanks to a 1'32.116 until his Lenovo teammate took charge on his 44th effort, the Italian calling time early, one lap later. Demoted to second, the Australian was initially trailed by Fabio Quartararo, just 0.019s behind, as the opening day looked to mirror Saturday’s San Marino GP qualifying result.

Takaaki Nakagami however, put in a late showing to split the Bologna pair in the closing hour, becoming only the second rider inside the 1’32 barrier before Pol Espargaro bettered and Joan Mir followed suit for fourth in the final minutes.

Aleix Espargaro was back to his, now regular, top five position, less than half a second off the day’s best pace as he too bettered Miller in the last half an hour, Luca Marini shining to sixth with his final effort after 50 laps at home.

The late shuffle bumped Quartararo down to eighth with Jorge Martin and Brad Binder completing the top 10. Valentino Rossi heading the best of the rest in 11th with Miguel Oliveira, Johann Zarco, Alex Rins and Marc Marquez rounding out the 15 fastest riders, all covered by less than a second.

Aprilia new recruit Maverick Viñales continued his education with the RS-GP - including debuting new smaller 2022 areo wings - from 16th, one-second adrift, ahead of Alex Marquez, while Franky Morbidelli and Andrea Dovizioso further got to grips with their respective new Yamaha M1’s from 18th and 19th.

Iker Lecuona, Enea Bastianini, Danilo Petrucci, Dani Pedrosa and Lorenzo Savadori completed the finishers, with Sunday's rising star taking an early bath due to a crash.

The day had got off to a slow start as morning rain hampered proceedings, with the majority of riders waiting for the afternoon session before venturing back out on the 4.2km track as they prepared for October's return and the Emilia Romagna GP.

Honda and Suzuki test riders Stefan Bradl and Sylvain Guintoli failed to feature in the timesheets as the pair waited for more promising conditions on Wednesday, however, Bradl was spotted on track first thing testing out the new 2022-spec RC213V, Marquez joining the analysis in the afternoon. Both Monster Energy riders also took trips on 2022-spec Yamaha machinery throughout the afternoon.
