Dynavolt Moto2 rider Marcel Schrotter left it late to pip his team-mate Tom Luthi to take his third pole position of 2019 in Mugello.
The German rider had been building to a fast lap, but on his penultimate lap pulled out to prevent towing anyone along. With the flag out and Schrotter knowing he had one lap to deliver, he did, with a stunning 1:51.129.
Luthi had led for the entire session, but will have to settle for second place with Le Mans Grand Prix winner Alex Marquez rounding out the front row in third place, who was seen waving his arms angrily at Tetsuta Nagashima during his first run.
Sky Racing VR46 rider Nico Bulega will head the second row from fourth place with Jorge Navarro and his SppedUp machine will start from fifth with Friday’s fast man Luca Marini rounding out the second row.
Nagashima will start from seventh on his SAG Kalex with Sam Lowes and Augusto Fernandez starting from eighth and ninth respectively. Remy Gardner qualified in tenth place with rookies Enea Bastianini and Jorge Martin in eleventh and twelfth.
