MotoGP Portimao: ‘I didn’t expect that!’ - Dixon

Inde GasGas Aspar’s Jake Dixon came out fighting as the first Moto2 practice of 2023 fired up at Portimao on Friday.

Having set the bar with a 1’43.046 around the 4.6km Algarve International Circuit before the rain-struck morning action was curtailed, Dixon was back amongst the front runners for the second practice.

Shaving over half a second off his personal best time midway through the afternoon session, Dixon completed the first day of 2023 0.098s shy of Pedro Acosta’s pace-setting 1’42.391 and a quarter of a second ahead of his next nearest challenger, Filip Salac.

“Honestly, I didn’t expect, after the testing that I’ve had, to be as fast as I am,” Dixon admitted from Portugal on Friday evening. “It’s been a really difficult off-season, but as a team, as a whole, we’ve come back really strong for this race.

“We need to keep working in the correct way because at the minute we’re still not 100 per cent.

“We need to improve in some areas. I am confident but still there is a long way to go. We need to improve for tomorrow, have a good qualifying and try to get a solid race on Sunday.”
