MotoGP Qatar: Sunday stats, facts and information

Maverick Viñales has qualified on pole position for the seventh time in the premier class (equalling Andrea Dovizioso, Tadayuki Okada and Teuvo Lansivuori) – the 18th time of his career. This is his first back-to-back pole position since Misano and Aragon back in 2017.

This is the first back-to-back pole position for Yamaha since Johann Zarco in France and Valentino Rossi in Italy last year.

Andrea Dovizioso has qualified in second, which is his best qualifying result since he was also second in Aragon last year. Dovizioso has been either first or second for the last four years in Losail, with a win in 2018.

Marc Marquez, who won his only MotoGP race in Losail back in 2014 from pole position, completes the front row on the grid. Since Valencia in 2017, Marquez has always qualified within the top six. He was also third on the grid two years ago in Losail and eventually crossed the line in fourth.

Heading the second row as the top Independent Team rider is Jack Miller, which is his best qualifying result since he was the third fastest qualifier in Japan last season.

Making his debut in the premier class, Fabio Quartararo is the highest-placed rookie in fifth - and the second Yamaha rider on the grid.

Cal Crutchlow, who passed through Q1, has qualified sixth after ending Friday in 13th.

Franco Morbidelli has qualified in eighth on the grid, which is his best qualifying result since he stepped up to the MotoGP class.

Completing the third row on the grid after passing through Q1 is Takaaki Nakagami, which is his also best qualifying result since he stepped up to the MotoGP class.

The highest-placed Suzuki rider is Alex Rins in tenth. Rins crashed out of the MotoGP race last season in Losail.

Joan Mir, who is also making his debut in the premier class, has qualified 11th on the grid. Mir won the Moto3 race in Qatar two years ago – his second GP win.

Aleix Espargaro has qualified 12th, which is the best result on the grid for an Aprilia rider in the premier class in Qatar since Jeremy McWilliams was also 12th back in 2004 (after Valentino Rossi and Max Biaggi were given a penalty).

Valentino Rossi, who joins Q1 for the second successive time after Valencia last year, has qualified in 14th, which is his worst qualifying result since he was 16th - also in Valencia. This Rossi’s worst starting position in Losail since 2004, when he started from the back of the grid after being given a penalty.

After crashing in Q1, Jorge Lorenzo starts from 15th on the grid, which is his worst qualifying result since he was 16th in Australia back in 2017 and his worst in Losail in the premier class. Lorenzo is the most successful rider on the grid in Qatar with six wins (3 x MotoGP, 2 x 250cc, 1 x 125cc).
