MotoGP Qatar: We are taking uncessary risks – Marquez

MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez said that Race Direction is taking unnecessary risks by not moving the start time of the race forwards from 20:00 to 19:00.

The World Champion crashed twice on Saturday before seeing his teammate already beaten up teammate crash out of Q1 at the precarious turn two.

Last night the safety commission met to discuss the prospect of moving the start time forwards as they did in 2018, but the decision was made to keep it at 20:00 as originally planned, just when the dew point starts to come down.

“We already pushed a lot yesterday, nearly all the riders, to change the start time because we are taking a risk that is not necessary,” said the MotoGP World Champion.

“We are racing at 8:00 and last year we raced at 7:00. Of course we never know on the weather, but we are taking a risk that is not necessary, but anyway if we need to race we will race, but it would be better at 7:00.”

As for Marquez’ condition after crashing twice on his surgically repaired shoulder, the Spaniard said that he was feeling 100%.

“I feel 100% so this is positive, I’m really happy to be here on the front row,” he said.

“I don’t know if it’s the worst, but one of the most difficult circuits for us and we’re really here close to the top guys.

“Yesterday for example I felt really, really, really good. Today with the wind it was a little bit more difficult, it was difficult to mange and then on the qualifying I tried to play my cards and use another strategy and it works as my target was to be on the front row and tomorrow we will see.

“We don’t know who will be there I think these two guys are one of the fastest ones and it depends on the temperature. Today it was ice, as soon as we arrived at eight o‘clock the track was so slippery and we was pushing but there was some strange crashed on the left corners and then we were struggling a little bit more and we will see.”

Marquez often found himself forced to use the hard front tyre on his Honda. Marquez said that the track temperature will dictate what they use tomorrow night.

“Rear tyre is a question mark, but also for us the front tyre is, it depends on the temperature,” said Marquez.

“If the race is a good temperature we can use the hard and it’s working well, but we also saw in the quali that the medium front was working very, very, very good but it depends on the temperature of the track.”

After qualifying, Ducati made a complaint to Race Direction that Marquez had done both of his fastest laps behind Factory Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci. When asked about it, the Spaniard said with a smile: “Welcome to the official team, when you have an official bike, many riders follow you. How many riders have followed me, I mean it’s like this, but it’s okay, tomorrow is the race.”
