VNE Snipers Honda Moto3 rider Tony Arbolino claimed his third Moto3 pole position of 2019 after a capitalising on some strange qualifying tactics from the majority of Moto3 teams at Silverstone.
With the sun shining, conditions were perfect for Moto3 qualifying and it was Arbolino who posted the fastest lap-time through the first run of hot laps. The Italian’s best time of a 2:11.631 was 0.079 seconds clear of World Championship challenger Lorenzo Dalla Porta.
With the entire field in to change to stick new soft Dunlop tyres on, the whole field left it late to get a final flying lap in, with the majority of the field leaving pitlane with around 2:15 left on the clock.
Whilst the whole field got around to start a final flying lap – which is more than what can be said at multiple other rounds this year – the jostling for position and general messy riding with everybody looking for the perfect tow and position on the track, meant only three riders improved their lap-time on the final lap.
All of this left Arbolino with his early lap time atop the times, with Dalla Porta and Q1 graduate Augusto Fernandez rounding out the front row in second and third respectively.
Another Q1 man Ayumu Sasaki will head the second row in fourth place with Nico Antonelli, who walked away from a crash on his final lap, and home rider John McPhee joining the Japanese rider on the second row.
Celestino Vietti will start from seventh, ahead of Ai Ogura and Marcos Ramirez. Sergio Garcia was tenth with Tatsuki Suzuki and championship challenger Aron Canet rounding out the first four rows in twelfth place.
Jaume Masia will start from thirteenth place, with Romano Fenati and Andrea Migno completing a very fast fifth row.
