MXGP Britain: Get behind the support-class Brits

As well as the two main championship classes there’s no shortage of action – or British interest for that matter – at this weekend’s  MXGP of GB, round nine of the 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship, at Matterley Basin in Hampshire.

In the EMX250 class REVO Husqvarna UK team-mates Martin Barr and Mel Pocock currently sit one and two at the top of the table with just a couple of points between them. The pair have been extensively testing 2019 components over the last fortnight which should give them that all-important edge out of the gate.

They’ll need every edge they can get over the fast grassland track that follows the natural contours of a valley with France’s Mathys Boisrame (Honda) just a further six points off the pace.

Consistency is key in this class and that’s an area where Britain’s Steven Clarke (Carglass Honda needs to improve. Champion in 2014, he currently sits ninth in the points table after the first four rounds.

James Dunn (GL12 Racing KTM) has also struggled to post consistent results but the two-stroke hero who’s 17th in the standings has got podium speed if he can get out of the gate with the four-strokes.

British hopes in the EMX300 class for two-strokes rest firmly on the shoulders of defending champion Brad Anderson (Verde Substance KTM). Lying just eight points off the series lead after three rounds, the burly North Easterner won last time out in Russia to close the gap on Dutchman Mike Kras (GL12 Racing KTM).

The Veteran World Cup is a one-hit event with the entry led by two-time world 250cc champion Mickael Pichon. Defending VMX champion Martin Zerava is back again and Tim Gajser’s father, Bogomir, will also be in action along with Max Anstie’s dad, Mervyn. Britain’s best hope of a top finish lie with super-vet Brian Wheeler.

As always with an MXGP of GB there’s a whole raft of British wild card entries across all three classes so the home fans will have plenty of riders to get behind.
