Former Olympian and BSB team owner Derek Redmond has revealed he will return to the club racing scene after a year out – and promises to bring ‘an exciting new concept to club racing’.

While the famous ex-Olympian refuses to give too much away at this point, Bikesport News understands he will remain loyal to his beloved No Limits series as he pulls together a team which he hopes will dominate.

Redmond is certainly no stranger to motorbike racing. He became well known in bike racing circles when he teamed up with John Dimbylow in 2011 to form the Splitlath Redmond British Superbike team, but prior to that he had also ran his own club racing team.

Derek Redmond Racing had been a strong force in the old Hottrax series, as they contested numerous classes with up to six riders – which included himself aboard his own Kawasaki.

Following the demise of Splitlath Redmond, the doughnut-loving star came straight back into clubland, setting up a team with Mark Grimes known as RG Moto which ran in the No Limits endurance series in 2014.

Last year the pair went their separate ways with Grimes setting up Crank Racing which is now making a lot of noise with Josh Day in Thundersport and NG, while Redmond concentrated on other projects.

But speaking to Bikesport News on Sunday, he admitted he can’t cope without his racing fix. “I miss it. I miss far more than I imagined and I can’t stay away,” he said. “At the end of 2014 I sold up, got rid of my bike and the motorhome but I think I regretted it pretty quickly.

“I was too late to get things set for this year but now I’m well into the planning for next year. I am going to come back with bang, we will come back with something a bit like the old Derek Redmond Racing team but we’ll do it even better than last time.

“I’ve got an idea, it’s such a big idea I can’t even tell you yet because someone will steal it but I can say it’s something new, a new concept in club racing and it could be something really special.

“I can’t say whether or not I’ll be riding. I miss riding, I loved the days when I was racing but at the same time I’m not getting any younger. I know there are lots of people who could destroy me on a track so maybe I need to be getting them to race for me, instead of against me?”

For now, Redmond keeps his hand in via his involvement with No Limits Trackdays, and insists any racing will remain in the No Limits family. “Since coming to No Limits I’ve felt well at home and I want to come back to the series with a team that can win.

“I’ll always have that competitive edge so rest assured when I come back it’ll be to win. Whether it’s winning with someone else on my bike remains to be seen, but I will definitely be back. Who knows, I may even pop out in a few races this year yet. You better watch this space.”
