Tommy Bridewell served up two superb and masterful rides at Oulton Park on Sunday, staking a serious claim for this year’s Bennetts British Superbike Championship in more ways than one on the Oxford Products Ducati.

The two wins were achieved in contrasting styles, the first seeing him fight his way through the pack from 13th after running on at the Hizzy’s chicane, whilst the second was quite simply a high-speed demonstration that saw him destroy the field in a manner rarely seen in the 25-year history of the BSB series.
 
The victories, just his sixth and seventh in more than 300 BSB races, couldn’t have come at a better time and helped him take full advantage of the fortunes of Jason O’Halloran and Tarran Mackenzie to close to within nine points of the championship lead.
 
“I’m so proud of the team, so proud of myself and so proud of everyone that supports me,” the Wiltshire rider said afterwards.
 
“What can I say, it’s my first BSB double on a single weekend and whilst I’m smiling, there is a tinge of disappointment as I felt I had the pace to do the treble here at Oulton.”
 
“After the wet qualifying session, we went the wrong way with the bike for Saturday’s race which just made it hard but I’m so chuffed to take the double today. The bike was on rails”
 
“People say I’m the nearest threat to the Yamahas but that’s not good enough for me, I’m the main threat. Yamaha, or whoever, need to be concerned. I said coming into the Showdown that I’ll do whatever it takes to win and if that’s running clean races, I’ll do it.
 
“The way BSB has been this year, I wouldn’t say it’s been horrific but there’s been some quite dirty riding. I haven’t watched the races back but from reports of what other people have been telling me and from what I gather, the usual contenders were up to their antics in the races here.
 
“I’m so chuffed I managed to get clear, get out of it and run my own race, riding to my pitboard and lap timer. Massive thanks to the team and for giving me a great bike. Yes, I’m the one riding it but I’m so proud of everyone connected with the team.”
 
With his confidence sky high and with the two remaining rounds at two more of Bridewell’s favourite circuits – Donington Park (where he won both last year and earlier this season) and Brands Hatch, where he took two second place finishes in July – Bridewell could now be seen as the title favourite. But with the way the racing’s gone this season, there are sure to be more twists and turns in the final six races.
