Oulton BSB: Swann surprises with BSS pole

Scott Swann took a surprise pole position for this afternoon’s Quattro Group British Supersport/GP2 Championship race at Oulton Park, with the IFS Racing Yamaha rider edging out Danny Webb and Jack Kennedy.

It was Korie McGreevy (Mar-Train Racing Yamaha) who set the early pace from countryman Eunan McGlinchey (Gearlink Kawasaki) and new championship recruit Webb, replacing the injured Kyle Smith at Dynavolt Triumph, but championship contender Kennedy (HEL Performance/Bournemouth Kawasaki) soon relegated them down the order as he went quickest on his first flying lap.

Another Irishman, of the Northern variety, then went to the top of the leaderboard with Swann pushing Kennedy down the order but his stay didn’t last long as McGreevy returned to the number one spot.

However, just as he was in the dry, Kennedy was again the man looking most likely and after ten minutes of the damp session, he was more than a second clear of McGreevy.

Times were continuing to fall though and that meant positions were regularly changing, Swann going quickest once more with a 1’48.098, half a second quicker than Kennedy’s previous best time.

Mid-way through the 25-minute session, the running order was Swann, Kennedy, Webb, McGreevy, McGlinchey and Charlie Nesbitt (RS Racing Kalex) with Bradley Perie (Appleyard Macadam Yamaha) again struggling in the damp conditions as he found himself down the order in 13th.

Nesbitt was leading the way in the GP2 class from Dan Jones and Mason Law but Kennedy reasserted his authority with a 1’47’560 to move back into first place; it didn’t last long though as Swann’s strong run continued with a 1’47.275 seeing him take control once more.

It was then McGreevy’s turn again at the top of the timesheets after lapping at 1’47.182 and as he did that, Cameron Horsman went quickest in the GP2 class whilst championship leader Ben Currie began to make an impression in fourth on the Gearlink Kawasaki. That soon became third too as he overhauled Kennedy.

After a lull in proceedings, the final few minutes saw the flurry of action return and it was ultimately Swann that sealed pole position by just over three-tenths of a second from Webb with Kennedy the leading championship contender in third.

Dutch rider Jamie van Sikkelerus placed fourth from the leading GP2 runners, Nesbitt and Jones, with James Hind, Rhys Irwin, Lee Johnston and Currie completing the top ten.

McGreevy was a late faller at Shell and slipped back to 12th whilst Perie could only manage 14th.
