Yamaha's MotoGP boss Lin Jarvis believes a complete revolution of his team and the YZR-M1 could have been counter-productive and says the Monster-backed squad have gone for evolution instead.
With only one race win since before all this was fields, Yamaha have to bring something to deal with Ducati and Honda in 2019, and Jarvis hopeful they have gone in the correct direction.
"We don’t need a revolution at the moment. We need strong evolution. At the end of last year, we were very close. We need to be perfect in every area. If we bring revolution now, we may lose our base," said Jarvis, speaking at the team launch.
Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales will test new chassis and electronic parts at Sepang this week but will only have a couple of finely-tuned engine specifications to use.
“There’s nothing radical. We spent most of the time in Valencia selecting our engine, so now we will deliver one or two choices that will be fine-tuned from Valencia. I don’t think we needed any revolutions but hopefully everything will be working well.”
The squad's European boffs will now work more closely with engineers in Japan while an electronics working group, headed by Michele Gadda, has been set up.
