Silverstone BSB: 'Horrendous chatter' limits Bridewell

After suffering traumatic practice and qualifying sessions, which saw them start the first race from the back of the grid, Tommy Bridewell and the Oxford Racing Ducati team got stronger and stronger as the weekend wore on at Silverstone to maintain their second place in the 2020 Bennetts British Superbike Championship season.

Oil cooler and electrical problems hindered them initially but having taken a fighting tenth place on Saturday, Bridewell was a lot more racy on Sunday with fifth and sixth place finishes limiting his losses to series leader Glenn Irwin to 12 points.

“That was a tough weekend and definitely a case of damage limitation,” Bridewell told bikesportnews.com after completing the final race. “We’ve been suffering with horrendous chatter and with it being extremely bad last time out at Snetterton, I had a feeling Silverstone was going to be a hard weekend as it’s notoriously bumpy so we did what we had to do in the three races.”

“We made a change to the bike for the final race but it was a fundamental part that we changed and it made a massive difference. However, we needed the track time to get the bike set up and race three was like FP1 for me.”

With reduced chatter, Bridewell was able to put in a ride more in line with what we’ve been accustomed to and, after sixth in Sunday’s first race, he ended his weekend with a strong fifth as he overhauled the similarly-mounted Josh Brookes and Christian Iddon on the final lap. And he’s now eagerly looking forward to getting back to some of his stronger circuits.

‘If we’d started the weekend with the bike how we ended it, I’m sure the results would have been a lot different. But given the problems we’ve had this weekend, to come away having only lost 12 points to Glenn isn’t too bad. The next rounds are at circuits what I’d call my territory so I’m really looking forward to Oulton.”
