Fresh from his maiden victory in the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship last time out at Snetterton, Lee Johnston made it win number two on the Ashcourt Racing Yamaha in Saturday’s Sprint race at Silverstone.

He came home ahead of leading GP2 rider Charlie Nesbitt (RS Racing Kalex) and Bradley Perie (Appleyard Macadam Yamaha) but with Jack Kennedy being knocked off, Ben Currie has moved in to the championship lead.

Currie led at the end of the opening lap on his Gearlink Kawasaki from Perie, Kennedy, Johnston, Harry Truelove and pole man Rhys Irwin but whilst the order remained the same second time around, it didn’t on lap four as Truelove came into Becketts too hot and skittled Kennedy, both riders crashing out with the Dubliner limping away from the scene.

From that moment on, it became a tight battle between six riders – four Supersports and two GP2 machines – and although positions changed hands regularly, no one was able to break away.

Going into the final lap, only half a second covered the top six of Johnston, Nesbitt, Perie, Irwin, Currie and Mason Law and that was how they finished but it was close with Johnston’s winning margin over Nesbitt just 0.035s.

Dan Jones took seventh to join Nesbitt and Law on the GP2 podium and he was only a second behind the race winner, with Cameron Horsman and Northern Ireland pairing Scott Swann and Eunan McGlinchey completing the top ten.

Currie now leads the Supersport standings on 229pts, six ahead of the unfortunate Kennedy with Perie (216) third and Johnston (204) fourth.
