Silverstone BSB: Mackenzie hauls himself into contention

Tarran Mackenzie took full advantage of the Silverstone circuit working well for his McAMS Yamaha at the weekend and with only a technical problem preventing him from taking three podiums from the three Bennetts British Superbike Championship races.

After bagging an emotional win on Saturday, the Ashby de la Zouch rider was on course for a second successive podium, at least, in Sunday’s first race only for a gearbox issue to force him out at half race distance.

“This is a track that works well for the Yamaha so it was nice to come here and use that to our advantage and capitalise on it,” Mackenzie said.

“I was really disappointed to have the technical issue in race two though as I deserved a bit more than that. I was feeling really comfortable at the front, I was saving my tyre nicely and was hoping to have a bit of a dig at the end so to pull out was really unfortunate.”

But he bounced back well to take second place in the final race of the weekend ahead of team-mate Jason O’Halloran to make it six career podiums at the Northamptonshire venue, his most successful on the BSB calendar.

“I wanted to bounce back in the last race and although starting ninth wasn’t ideal, I did my best to get past people. It was tough at times and I used a lot of the tyre getting by so once I was through I didn’t have much else for Kyle. He was setting a great pace out front so I rode my own race and tried to fend off Jason, which I managed to do.”

The weekend’s results have helped move the 24-year old up to seventh overall in the title chase, 56 points behind leader Glenn Irwin, and with a good base setting now with the 2020-spec R1 Yamaha, he’s hoping to close the gap further next time out.

“I’m feeling good on the bike and we haven’t changed it since Snetterton so that’s a good thing going to Oulton Park fully fit and full of confidence. I can’t wait to get going now.”
