Buildbase Suzuki’s Kyle Ryde has taken his maiden Bennetts British Superbike win at Silverstone this lunchtime, crossing the line 1.7s ahead of former champion Josh Brookes with Jason O’Halloran in third.
The Buildbase Suzuki rider shadowed long time leader Josh Brookes (VisionTrack Ducati) before making his move on the 27th of the 30 laps and once in front, he pulled the pin to win by 1.6s. Brookes held on for second from Jason O’Halloran (McAMS Yamaha) by 0.074s.
It was Ryde and Saturday’s race winner Tarran Mackenzie (McAMS Yamaha) who disputed the lead on the opening lap but Brookes hit the front second time around, something he held on to for another 25 laps.
Mackenzie sat on his tail until half race distance when he ran off track at Brooklands after the R1 appeared to lock up and although he rejoined, he pulled in a lap later, .
That left Ryde and O’Halloran to keep the pressure on Brookes and they edged away from the chasing pack which was initially led by Andrew Irwin (Honda Racing) before he too ran wide at Brooklands, dropping back to eighth.
That left a group of six riders to dispute the position with championship leader Glenn Irwin (Honda Racing) fighting his way to the front where he promptly set about closing the gap to the leaders, aided by the fastest lap of the race.
Brookes continued to maintain control but Ryde was the quicker rider on the exit of the final corner and made a number of attempts to pull alongside the Australian before finally making the move stick on the 27th lap.
Just a lap later, he’d opened up a gap of more than half a second and he did that for the final two laps to take a first BSB victory, just a day after his first BSB podium.
Brookes had his hands full with O’Halloran but a slight mistake by the Yamaha rider at the start of the final lap gave the 2015 Champion some breathing space and he just held on for a vital second place finish.
Glenn Irwin took a solid fourth to again extend his championship lead and in the final lap sort out, it was Bradley Ray (Synetiq BMW) and Tommy Bridewell (Oxford Products Racing Ducati) who came through for fifth and sixth, the latter losing three points to Irwin in the title chase.
Lee Jackson (Rapid Fulfillment Kawasaki) just saw off Andrew Irwin and team-mate Danny Buchan in the closing stages to take seventh although Irwin was relegated to ninth after exceeding track limits on the final lap. Hector Barbera completed the top ten after Christian Iddon (VisionTrack Ducati) again lost ground in the final laps and dropped back to 13th.
