Snetterton BSB: Skinner takes Supersport sprint race win

Rory Skinner made it three wins from three in the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship as he took the honours in the 12-lap ‘Sprint’ race at Snetterton late on Saturday afternoon.

Unlike the opening round at Donington Park though, the Tyser Yamaha rider had to work extremely hard for it as he was pressured strongly by fellow Yamaha riders Bradley Perie, Harry Truelove and Lee Johnston, his eventual winning margin over Truelove just 0.189s.

It was the Diamond H Racing machine of Perie that grabbed the lead off the line and it wasn’t until the fourth lap that Skinner took the lead for the first time, Truelove (Truelove Brothers Racing Yamaha), Johnston (Ashcourt Racing Yamaha) and the Gearlink Kawasaki of James Westmoreland in close pursuit. Skinner’s team-mate Brad Jones was in trouble though as he found himself outside the top twenty.

At half race distance, Skinner’s lead over Truelove was only 0.254s but a lap later Truelove missed his braking point at the end of the Bentley Straight and ran onto the grass, giving Skinner some much needed breathing space.

His lead had extended to 1.5s by lap nine as Truelove’s off-track excursion enabled Johnston to overhaul him for second but the Lincolnshire rider wasn’t to be outdone and was back up to second on the penultimate lap.

At the same time, Skinner was held up by a backmarker and his advantage came down although Truelove ultimately ran out of time and had to settle for second - second was a career-best finish for the youngster..

Johnston was back on the podium in third, just holding off the close attentions of Westmoreland with one-time leader Perie slipping back to fifth at the chequered flag.

Further back, the second Gearlink Kawasaki of Ben Currie got the better of Korie McGreevy (Century Racing Yamaha) on the run in to the line and another Ulsterman took eighth, Alastair Seeley also comfortably being the first GP2 Cup rider to finish.

James Rose and Ross Patterson rounded out the top ten with Jack Scott and Charlie Nesbitt the next GP2 Cup riders home in 11th and 14th overall respectively. Jones took 13th but picked up five points for the 11th-placed Supersport machine.
