Swedish racer breaks world ice wheelie speed record

Slightly-unhinged Swedish racer Robert Gull has broken the World Ice Speed Wheelie record with an average speed of 114mph just a year after recovering from an horrendous Superbike crash which put him temporarily in a wheelchair.

Gull, who has raced in the Red Bull Rookies Cup and CEV Moto2, took on the challenge because finding sponsors to fund racing in his native country are hard to come by so the 23-year-old thought he would try something new.

After some abortive attempts and moving further north to find suitable ice, Gull and his spike-tyre-equipped Honda CBR1000 finally set the new record with a top speed that went well above
120mph and the average over 100m on two runs at 114mph.

“I wasreally quite scared, but the fear and adrenaline makes me feel alive. I have not been riding so much on the ice, you do not have the same control as on tarmac and it’s especially difficult just to run on one wheel,” said Gull, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

“Everything has to be approved by Guinness World Records in advance, and then it was time for sending the measurement results and films from five different cameras together with a lot of documents with signatures and several testimonies before it became official.

“That’s a lot of work and many rules, but the feeling when I know it has gone well make it worth everything. And I’m very grateful for all the support I received from everyone around me and to so many took to the ice to witness the record.”

Gull would like to thank the rest of his team Anders Gull (Team Manager), Richard Andersson (Team Coordinator) and Maria Gull (Ground Staff), and Northbike.
