Triumph to partner PTR for British Supersport return in 2021

Triumph will make a return to the new-look Quattro British Supersport series in 2021, backing a team run by Performance Technical Racing.

The team, which has yet to finalise riders, will run a faired Street Triple RS which will look similar to the Daytona 765 Moto2 replica, under new rules drawn up by BSB, Dorna and the FIM.

“Triumph motorcycles will return to the racing scene with an officially factory-supported team in collaboration with Performance Technical Racing,” said Steve Sargent, Triumph’s Chief Product Officer.

“The Triumph PTR racing team will be the result of a partnership between the Hinckley-based brand and the racing team led by Simon Buckmaster. Simon and his team have made a significant mark in racing across numerous competitions, World Supersport and also the Isle of Man TT.

“The bike itself will be derived directly from the Street Triple RS with its 765cc. That’s proven to have outstanding performance and reliability in the last two season of Moto2.

“It’s an exciting project that we’re very happy to be involved in. We hope the British and global racing fans will enjoy watching and especially hearing the 765 triples in action next season.”

Triumph has a long history in British Supersport with four champions in the shape of Glenn Richards twice, Billy McConnell and Luke Stapleford.

“As a brand we’ve had a proud history of success in Supersport, particularly in British Supersport. So to be presented with an opportunity to revisit the same stage and to come back and to be part really of a journey to evolve Supersport into a class which is relevant going forwards,” said Sargent.

It’s been a fabulous class for developing talent, particularly British talent. It’s been a route through to WorldSBK and MotoGP for some key British riders. Obviously Cal Crutchlow being one of those; Jonathan Rea has been through Supersport and Chaz Davies also.

“So Supersport as a championship has been a fabulous way for developing talent. I think to be part of that process and part of that journey is fantastic for a brand like Triumph.”

Former Grand Prix rider Buckmaster will head up the project, moving away from his recent WorldSSP participation.

“I can honestly say I think the collaboration between PTR, Triumph, MSVR, Dorna and the FIM to work together to develop the new rules for the Supersport class in all regions in world championship racing is something that’s really good for the whole of motorcycle sport,” he said.

“I can genuinely say I’m proud to be part of it. We’re really looking forward to the start of the season, the start of the project.

“We are currently talking to riders and we hope to be able to bring on some young British talent and achieve our aims of winning British Supersport in year one and challenge for the title in World Supersport the year after.”
