TT 2022: Dunlop one step closer to Uncle Joey's record

Michael Dunlop moved one step closer to Uncle Joey’s record of 26 wins at the Isle of Man TT Races with victory in Friday morning’s Supersport race, his second of the week, moving him on to a career total of 21.

Riding the MD Racing Yamaha built and prepared by himself, Dunlop was locked in battle with Peter Hickman throughout the two lap encounter, just as he had been during Wednesday’s Supersport race.

Once again, there was little to choose between the duo with just half a second separating them at half race distance and although Dunlop increased his advantage to 1.8s at Glen Helen, Hickman and his K2 Trooper Beer Triumph brought the gap back down to 1.3s at Ballaugh.

However, as he’s done countless times before, Dunlop responded and having stretched his lead back to 1.6s at Ramsey Hairpin, a strong run up and down the Mountain helped him get the verdict by 3.2s. His fastest lap was 128.536mph.

“It’s been a hard week but I kept going and I’ve always said, when the job’s right, I’m right,” Dunlop said afterwards. “Pete’s on great form so it’s not easy to beat him so I’m well happy. I knew his Triumph, with its 765cc engine, would pull better up the Mountain but the bike kept going and I maybe rode a bit harder in places. I definitely enjoyed that one.”
