TT 2022: Supersport 'not easy with my big frame' - Hickman

Although unable to take his fourth win of the week at the Isle of Man TT Races, Peter Hickman took a close second place in Friday’s second Supersport race and pushed eventual race winner Michael Dunlop all the way.

Hickman, who won the second Supersport race in 2019, switched from the 675cc Triumph to the 765cc version for this year’s event and there was less than a second between the duo for the first of today’s two laps.

Dunlop had doubled his lead by Glen Helen second time around only for Hickman to take half a second back on the run to Ballaugh. However, Dunlop was then able to edge away on the second half of the lap with Hickman having to settle for second at the chequered flag, 3.2s adrift.

The runners-up spot followed on from his third place in the same race earlier in the week but he was nevertheless more than happy with another TT podium, his 19th in total, recognising it wasn’t an easy race with the strong winds over the Mountain.

“It’s unbelievable to finish second and the with the strong head wind on the Mountain, the bike was struggling,” he said afterwards. “I tried to get tucked in to the little bike as best I could but it’s not easy with my big frame and the Triumph’s not as good from an aero perspective compared to the Yamaha and Kawasaki.

“I haven’t ridden a 600cc bike since the 2019 Ulster so was on the back foot a little bit when we got here but we made a small change after Wednesday’s race and I tried my absolute best. Michael pulled a lot on me over the Mountain so who knows, maybe that was due to his experience on the little bikes, maybe he was a trying a bit harder and maybe keeping the throttle open in places where I wasn’t.

“Either way, I’m happy with second and the bike was mega. It’s new for 2022 and was built by my PHR company so I can’t complain with two Supersport podiums at the TT first time out with it.”
