WorldSBK Jerez: Redding pinches pole from Rea

Britain’s Scott Redding has pinched WorldSBK pole position from reigning champion Jonathan Rea to top his first qualifying session in the series.

Redding set a 1’38.736 to head the first row with Kawasaki’s Rea in second 0.034s in front. BMW’s King of Superpole Tom Sykes was third, 0.006s further back.

In the cooler conditions of the Superpole contest, and with qualifying rear tyre available, the official Pata Yamaha duo of Michael van der Mark and Toprak Razgatlioglu will line up fourth and fifth on the grid.

Yesterday’s top man, Loris Baz (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) was sixth and the top independent rider on the grid but it was disaster for championship leader Alex Lowes who slipped off early in the session and will start from 14th.

Chaz Davies was seventh on his official Aruba.it Ducati and the official HRC pairing of Alvaro Bautista and Leon Haslam finished their second Superpoles ever on the all-new Fireblade in eighth and ninth places – almost a second from the best time of Redding.

First day privateer sensation Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Team GoEleven Ducati) placed tenth, with second BMW works rider Eugene Laverty 11th and top Kawasaki privateer Sandro Cortese (OUTDO Kawasaki TPR) 12th
