WorldSBK Jerez: Redding wins race two as Rea struggles

Aruba Ducati’s Scott Redding took the second WorldSBK feature race win at Jerez this afternoon while reigning champion Jonathan Rea struggled to sixth.

Redding took the lead from the Kawasaki man on lap two and didn’t look back while Rea could do nothing as he slipped back through the pack with what looed like front-tyre problems.

The reigning BSB champion and former MotoGP rider put in another top level ride in only his second WorldSBK meeting ever, to lead Rea in the championship by a final 24 points as the series now heads to Portugal next week.

A rejuvenated Chaz Davies (Aruba Ducati) was a strong second, with the combative Toprak Razgatlioglu (Yamaha) third.

The greatest sensation was behind the podium battle, as Ducati privateer Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Team GoEleven Ducati) went fourth, passing Rea with finality as he completed an astounding weekend in many ways.

A KRT in-fight between Rea and Alex Lowes, the latter starting from further up the grid than he had in the first two races, saw Lowes maintain his late advantage to go fifth, leaving Rea a disappointed sixth.

Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team) placed seventh, Alvaro Bautista (HRC Honda), Marco Melandri (Barni Racing Ducati) and Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha) rounding out the top ten.

In the championship points, Redding has 98, Rea 74, Lowes 72 and Razgatlioglu 66.
