Repsol Honda 2022 launch - ten years with Marquez

Repsol Honda officially unveiled Marc Marquez and Pol Espargaro’s 2022 RC213V on Tuesday as it prepares to challenge for this year’s MotoGP title.

Taking a walk down memory lane, the presentation initially showcased a timeline of historic HRC liveries before revealing the radically updated Honda for Marquez’ tenth season with the team. New chassis, electronics and engine culminates two years of development for the Japanese manufacturer, due in part to the pandemic restrictions of recent seasons, as it ‘breaks out of it’s shell’ with the “biggest change” to development in the current regulation period.

The dominant Repsol/Honda partnership continues with a long-reaching view of the future, recognising the need and importance of the reduction in reliance on fossil fuels - including new Dorna-led regulations of a minimum 40 per cent fossil free component by 2024 and 100 per cent by 2027 with Repsol pledging carbon neutrality by 2050.

2022 brings a positive outlook after a turbulent couple of years, with qualifying performance targeted by Espargaro’s side of the garage while Marquez continues his rehabilitation to full fitness with his eyes firmly set on securing his ninth world championship.

“My goal this year is try to fight for the championship,” Marquez confirmed. “Of course last year was a very special situation, this year also was very critical situation in the winter time, but lucky the doctors, everybody who helps me to arrive already in the first test was a big surprise because was a critical situation with the double vision and nobody knew what will happen. But in the end, I follow the advice of the doctors and everything goes in a perfect way. From that point, the goal will be work hard in the preseason and fight for the championship during the season.

“Time passed too quick!” he continued, on his impressive history with the factory team.

“Ten seasons already in MotoGP and ten seasons in Repsol Honda team is a dream. It's something that I couldn't imagine in my best dreams.

“Of course also during these ten years we achieve very good results so this is something special and I want to enjoy it. I know we will try to win the title to celebrate well.”

Espargaro is also returning for his second year with the team after a difficult introduction and with a different approach to the season ahead thanks to the development of the new tools now at his disposal.

“In a very different way for sure,” the 30-year-old said. "I approach this season with more experience, which at the end is one of the most important things in MotoGP and knowing what I'm going to find in the test in Malaysia. We have just five days of testing and knowing already how is the team, how is the bike, what I'm going to find there, it's already something very, very important, very big.

"My riding style is quite a lot based on the rear grip and is what the new bike is based on,” Espargaro continued. “All the riders were complaining about that during the past year and honestly speaking Honda did a very good job. They touched on the points we were having most of the problems last year and I feel that the bike we have now is more on the line of the other bikes and I really think that our starting package is something great. Through the year with a new bike sure we are going to improve it and make it even greater but I think that the beginning point is great and I think from Qatar on we will feel ready to fight for something great, which is our target.”
