MotoGP Sepang test: Rain puts paid to Yamaha engine comparison

Lunchtime rain at Sepang put paid to Yamaha's MotoGP engine test scheduled for all of today at the Malaysian track so both Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies will go back to the circuit tomorrow to continue their evaluations.

The pair have been given different specs of YZR-M1 motor to compare but the circuit recently held a car test and is slick with old rubber so laptimes are down by two seconds. It is hoped the rain will have washed some of that away, so it can rubber in again tomorrow morning.

Chatter was also a problem for everyone in the dry part of the morning but that is a special feature of Sepang and may not carry through to the final pre-season test at Qatar at the end of next month. Lorenzo set the third fastest time of the day with Spies one place behind.

“Everything was good this morning; we were just waiting for the weather to improve in the afternoon. The Yamaha engineers delivered a lot for us to test again, it’s important we go the right way with the parts and not worry too much about what everyone else is doing. We have to focus on the task at hand which is what we’re doing and getting through all the updates methodically. We will keep working and hope for some good weather in the next two days," said Spies.
