Assen is first chance for Haslam to wrap up 2018 BSB title

JG Speedfit Kawasaki's Leon Haslam could wrap up his first Bennetts British Superbike title at Assen this weekend but would need youngster Jake Dixon to have a shocker and not finish either race in the top 15.

Haslam needs to leave Holland with a 76-point advantage over Dixon and the RAF Reserves Kawasaki team which means he has to win both races and needs Dixon to not pick up a single point over the weekend. It's a big ask but stranger things have happened in this championship.

Currently, Haslam has a 31-point lead over Dixon with McAMS Yamaha's Josh Brookes and the Be Wiser Ducati of Glenn Irwin both a further 43 points behind the Kent rider.

The Derby man has won the last three out of four races at Assen and is riding a confidence high. Dixon flew to Aragon over the weekend and sorted out a two-year deal to ride for the Nieto KTM team in Moto2 but his motivation to go into the GP paddock as BSB king is equally lofty.

“I can’t wait for Assen as it seems like ages since we rode now! The Showdown so far has been good and Assen is one of my favourite circuits – I have a 75% win rate there out of the last four races and the racing is always so close," said Haslam.

"We always have some great last lap battles with the final chicane and the circuit itself has a lot of history for me and the Haslam family. Hopefully we can have two more good fights with two solid races and try and get this championship sorted out.”
