From next season the use of aerodynamic wings in the MotoGP class will be banned, after a decision was made during a meeting of the Grand Prix Commission in Assen today.

The Commission made up of, Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, Chairman), Ignacio Verneda (FIM CEO), Herve Poncharal (IRTA) and Takanao Tsubouchi (MSMA) in the presence of Javier Alonso (Dorna) and Mike Trimby (IRTA, Secretary of the meeting) “unanimously agreed” that, with effect from the 2017, the use of winglets in the premier class will no longer allowed to be used.

The Commission decided that: “The actual regulation will replicate those for the Moto3 and Moto2 classes where the use of wings is already prohibited. Wings that comply with current technical regulations may continue to be used for the remainder of the 2016 season.”

Both Ducati and Yamaha both used winglets towards the end of last year, with Honda joining suit this season, closely followed by Aprilia and Suzuki, all having the wings available to them.

The winglets were brought in to reduce the amount of wheeling that could occur when going faster, and to create more of a down force on the bike. There have also been rumours of safety concerns in regards to the winglets around the MotoGP paddocks too.
