Billy Redmayne has died

Up and coming Manx road racer Billy Redmayne has died in a Middlesbrough hospital after suffering serious head injuries in an incident at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough on Sunday.

The 25-year-old soldier from Laxey, was involved in a crash on the back straight, the fastest part of the 2.43-mile road circuit, in the feature Bob Smith Spring Cup race and was taken to hospital by an Army helicopter where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.

Mr Redmayne, a full-time member of the parachute regiment, was relatively unheard of when he contested the 2014 Newcomers Manx Grand Prix but he showed his undoubted potential with victory and he then went on to take second place in the main Junior race later in the week, where he lapped at 119.062mph, to firmly establish himself as one of the most exciting talents to emerge in recent years.

From that moment on, he was a regular at the road races and scored strong results at both Scarborough and the Southern 100, finishing eighth in the feature Solo Championship race at the latter in 2015.

He returned to the Manx Grand Prix in 2015 and continued his battles with Malachi Mitchell-Thomas in the Junior and Senior races that saw the duo both comfortably lap in excess of 120mph. Indeed, Redmayne went on to win the Junior riding a Martin Bullock Honda and was lying a close second in the Senior, with just two seconds separating the duo once more, when he was forced to retire on the final lap. His fastest lap was 121.523mph, the fourth fastest ever in the history of the Manx Grand Prix.

Mr Redmayne was due to make his North West 200 and Isle of Man TT races debut this year riding his own Kawasaki ZX-10R, which he was riding when the tragic incident occurred, and Jack Valentine’s ValMoto 675 MV Agusta.

bikesportnews.com would like to extend their deepest sympathies to all of Billy’s family and friends.
