Brands BSB: Byrne makes history as he clinches record-breaking fifth title

Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne created history at his home track of Brands Hatch by clinching the 2016 MCE British Superbike crown, and now has five record breaking titles to his name.

He finished race two in sixth, just one place behind rival Leon Haslam and that was enough to take the championship once again.

Haslam crashed out of race one, leaving Byrne with a 27-point advantage going into the first of two races today and the Panigale racer bagged the title with one race to go.

"The way we have worked this year has been key for the championship because as I was very keen not to  rush or short cut anything and we took on a new project with the Panigale R and Ducati have given us some great support. We had a lot of work to do and our team worked really well, and I worked well with my crew chief Giovanni," said Byrne at the circuit.

"It took me seven races to actually win a race on the Ducati and we turned a bike that hasn't won a race in a number of years to a bike that has won nine and a title."

Be Wiser Ducati Team Owner, Paul Bird, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the track added: “It means the most and to come to Ducati and to win that in our first year back with them is ultra special.

“It just means so much to us and Ducati as well. We have some pretty special people in our team and we were confident that we could be there or there a bouts. We want to win again next year and I think this could be the most special one [title].”
