Brands BSB: Haslam targets podium after testing nightmare

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam is still aiming for the MCE British Superbike podium at Brands despite a Cadwell testing nightmare which saw him run into engine trouble again.

The Derby-based rider has only been back from Suzuka for a couple days but went to the Lincolnshire track to test but an electronic problem followed by another engine issue saw his track time drastically cut. Haslam is, however, physically much better after his Knockhill crash and intends to add to his 2017 win tally.

“I am feeling physically better than I did at Snetterton with the extra time, although I have had a hectic schedule since then with testing in Japan for the Suzuka Eight-Hours and then we have been out at Cadwell Park too this week although we had a few issues there,” said Haslam.

“I do feel that I am going into this weekend riding a bit more like how I want to compared to how I was at Snetterton now I have had some more time. The Brands Hatch GP races are so important because we go back there in the Showdown so it is important to get it right. I feel that the circuit is more suited to the JG Speedfit Kawasaki than Snetterton, but at the same time we know it is a place where Shakey and the Ducati go well so it won’t be easy.

“I want to be back on the podium this weekend because it feels like a long time since I have been doing some winning. We should have at Oulton Park before the DNF and then we missed Knockhill so it feels like a long time coming.

“We need to put in a good structure for our programme this weekend and when we do that for sure we can get back to winning and fighting at the front where we should be.”
