Brands BSB: Iddon third in points chase after double podium

Tyco BMW’s Christian Iddon is firmly in Showdown contention after making it on to the MCE British Superbike podium, twice durng the double-header at the Brands Hatch Indy track.

The Stockport lad finished race one in third and went one better, with a second place finish in the final event. Iddon now has a total of 65 points and lies third in the overall championship standings.

Initially Iddon was ‘nervous’ about qualifying, as he felt that he did not have the speed over one lap, but he certainly had the pace in the races and used the SC2 front and SC0 rear soft tyres in both events this afternoon.

He was able to keep JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam on his toes and it was an intense battle for second between the pair at the Kent track. Iddon’s pace got better throughout the races and now he has five podium credits to his name.

“I was a little worried when O’Halloran came through but I made sure I got past him as I knew I had the pace to try and run with the boys,” said Iddon at the circuit.

“We then got into a rhythm, but my tyre dropped earlier - about lap ten and that stressed me out a bit and I tried to be careful with what I am doing and then it came back to me and then I passed Leon, and then with about eight to go I thought I have got a chance here. I thought we generally have a good shot at this.

“Just the last three or four laps I just pushed the tyre too much and by then the front had a real load of wear on it too, and I was just happy to see the flag. Two podiums on the day is great and I am peaking and the team have done a great job.

Speaking after race one: “What I was nervous about what qualifying as I have no speed over one lap and I was really scared of being down in 15th knowing we had pace to be on the podium.

“I am happy things worked out the way they did, the other thing this morning when we woke up conditions were a bit cooler than what I expected so that played part in our strategy.

“It is nice how it all played out well. I was quite surprised on my board that we made a gap and my board was going up and up and it is a lovely thing to see and mid race Leon’s pace dripped very slightly and then got in front and I got plus zero and then I was sure someone else was there when Leon came through and I knew that Leon was trying to defend himself.

“The last few laps were mint and great fun. The bike has been consistent all weekend and that is sort of the package that we are at. Well done to Luke to take his first race win and nice consistent pace was nice to watch and big thanks to Tyco BMW.”
