Broken wrist rules Laverty out of final MotoGP test day

Eugene Laverty was forced to miss the final day of MotoGP testing at Jerez after breaking his lef wrist in a crash yesterday.

The Monegasque lost the front at turn seven and X-rays at a local hospital confirmed a break to his left radius. Further examination also revealed a dislocated shoulder and blow to the head. Laverty has flown from Seville to Barcelona and the Hospital Universitario Quirón Dexeus, where Dr. Xavier Mir and his medical team have conducted surgery to relocate and fix his broken and displaced radius.

“It’s a disappointing end to a good day of testing. We made good progress with the new electronics and the last exit before I crashed was probably the first time we had the bike working correctly,” said Laverty.

“The lap times were getting better and then I crashed, so I’m disappointed. It would always be nice to do another day but the positive thing is that the bike is working well, we are not too far away from the others and Yonny can continue to test tomorrow. Also the Ducati guys are making a big effort so the aim right now is to recover and return in Sepang in a good way.”

In addition to the metaphyseal fracture of the distal radius with avulsion of the left ulnar styloid, Laverty was also diagnosed with a small fracture of the first thoracic vertebra, and a fracture of the coracoid aphophysis in his right shoulder. Both the shoulder and vertebra can be treated with rest, although a surgical procedure was required for his left arm.

Laverty entered the operating theatre at around 3pm, today undergoing an operation that lasted 90minutes. Dr. Mir performed an open reduction of the fracture and fixed it with a titanium plate. He is likely to leave the medical centre this evening.
