BSB boss positive about return of Match Races

MCE British Superbike series director Stuart Higgs is positive about the possibility of a return to the UK v America Match Races if some scheduling problems can be ironed out.

Higgs believes that a series could appear as part of a BSB weekend with an American team coming over and racing for non-championship points against a nominated British team especially given that John Hopkins and James Rispoli are already here.

“It’s certainly progressed from being just a nice idea to more achievable. Until now its been very much one way traffic, but with significant advocates like multiple World Champion and now MotoAmerica President Wayne Rainey there is momentum building,” Higgs told bikesportnews.com.

There are some differences in the BSB and MotoAmerica technical regulations but that didn’t get in the way back in the series’ heyday.

“Let’s remember the real glory days of the Match Races and I think you will recall no-one raised the issue that factory and privateer 500cc GP bikes were alongside TZ750 Yamaha’s and TT F1 four-stroke machinery.

“Any current edition would likely be the current BSB and MotoAmerica Superbikes which are pretty close. USA has more open electronics, whilst BSB has more trick chassis. I think it’s close enough and want to resist a strangling debate on technical matters, I think motorsport is fed up to the core with such things.”
