Cadwell BSB: Front tyre gamble pays off for Ducati's Byrne

Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne set the fastest time around the Cadwell Park track, during the second MCE British Superbike free practice session, and was only 0.2s off his outright lap record, of a 1’26.017 this afternoon.

The Panigale racer also tested out a Pirelli SC2 front tyre, which he has not used with the bike before. It seemed to work for the Englishman, as he set his fastest time, a 1’26.291 on it in FP2. Byrne still holds the outright record at the Lincolnshire circuit, but can it be beaten? Well he certainly thinks so.

“Yes for sure 100 percent,” said Byrne, speaking at the track after the second free practice session. The 26.2 was with a completely different front tyre and it is the first time I have used it with the Ducati so I was a bit cautious,” said Byrne at the track.

“I wanted to push on a bit and test the tyre but at the same time I get a good feeling from the tyre that I usually use so it was a bit of a comparison really. I think a 1’25 will be doable and it will be nice to do one tomorrow.”

Byrne currently leads the championship, from JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam and has come with the objective to win both races on Monday, but he knows it wont be easy.

“I come with high expectations I want to win both races but I have some incredibly tough competitors to race against. Sometimes things go your way and sometimes they don’t but we are certainly working as hard as we can.”
