Chatter an issue for Redding but used tyre pace better

Britain’s Scott Redding took some positives from the first MotoGP test at Sepang, particularly his pace on used tyres, but he is still suffering with chatter on a new tyre.

Redding has graduated to a Ducati GP16 with the Octo Pramac team this year and ended the three-day Malaysia session a little less than 1.3s off Maverick Vinales’ pace but the Gloucestershire man is buyoed by his race pace.

“We improved a little bit the feeling and the turning of the bike, but what we’re still struggling with is chattering, especially when I put in a new tyre and go for a laptime. I had really bad chatter at turns five and 12 and in the end it was just impossible to ride. We had to give up on the laptime,” said Redding, speaking at the track.

“With used tyres I improved quite a lot. I was stringing together five or seven laps and felt more comfortable. The problem was when I went for that laptime I had chattering that was so bad I couldn’t even make the corner, so the whole lap was gone.”

“Apart from that it’s been not too bad. I’ve found some things that helped me with the braking, the turning. There were some positives, the laptimes don’t really show what our full potential was.”
