Cookstown 100: Superbike double win for Martin

Tyco BMW’s Guy Martin bagged a brace of Superbike wins today at the KDM Hire Cookstown 100 as rival MichaelDunlop walked away from a crash.

In the Open race it was poleman Derek Sheils on his Bikebits NI Kawasaki who got the perfect start, but his lead was short lived as, on lap three, Martin and moved to the front spot, where he stayed to the chequered flag holding off a late charging Michael Dunlop, crossing the line a mere 0.114 seconds in front with Sheils third.

In the feature race the TV star led off the line, Dunlop on the Milwaukee again made up lost ground and was quickly breathing up Martin’s exhaust, on the seventh lap he nipped up the inside of Martin going into the Blacks Farm jump and opened up a half second gap, but his lead came to a sudden end when he crashed out unhurt on lap eight bringing out the red flags. Martin was declared the winner from Derek Sheils and Martrain Yamahas Dean Harrison in third.

“I could have smoked a Woodbine in that last race, the Superstock BMW was so stable and working just mint. I was never under any pressure and when Dunlop came past, I thought, ‘this will give me a chance to have a look at what he is doing and plan my pass for the last lap’,” said Martin.

“We certainly had an advantage on the back part of the circuit and definitely the speed on the front straight to make the pass. It didn’t need to happen, but a good day all round and just what we needed.”

William Dunlop was on blistering form on his CD Racing Yamaha winning both the Supersport races, the first from Dean Harrison (Martrain Yamaha) and Jamie Hamilton (Cookstown BE Engineering Honda) and the second from Derek McGee (Wilson Craig Honda) and Harrison this time finished in third.

Michael Dunlop failed to finish both Supersport races due to mechanical problems had a win in the Supertwin race Michael Sweeney (Kiely Heating Racing Kawasaki) was second and Jamie Hamilton third.
