Donington BSB: Ray double an 'unbelievable feeling'

Donington double race winner and championship leader Bradley Ray says he can’t believe he has left round one of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship with the series lead.

The Buildbase Suzuki rider backed up yesterday’s race win with an even more convincing victory today, as he beat JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam over the line by 3.450s.

Ray, who was the only rider to opt for a medium front as the track continued to dry, says he capitalised in the early stages after launching himself into the lead at the green light.

“I think it helped with me being on pole and leading on the first few laps because I could get to the dry points before anyone else, and was able to get a gap.

“It was one of those races where you know you’ve got to take a risk but you don’t want to take too much of a risk. I decided I wanted to have a go for it and see what happened.

“The bike has worked well all weekend, but I never dreamed of this at all. I was expecting to be up with the front boys but not to be leading races and winning races yet.”

As he headed home to Kent, the 20-year-old admitted he was still letting it all sink in, and knows exactly how he was going to celebrate.

“This is just an unbelievable feeling, I can’t explain it. I’m absolutely speechless. We’re heading home tonight and I think a celebratory trip to Maccy Ds is on the cards.”
