Donington WSBK: Another step forward for Lowes

Voltcom Suzuki’s Alex Lowes took another step forward with setup during today’s World Superbike Superpole session at Donington Park, breaking into the 1’27 bracket on a race tyre and eventually bagging a second-row start.

The Derbsy-based rider has gradually made progress with the troublesome electronics and his first lap in Superpole two stunned the paddock, and he could only find another tenth using the sticky Pirelli qualifier.

“The bike has been getting better all weekend, we have taken a step forward from the last three races and we have been able to look at the setting instead of sorting the fundamental things that have been wrong,” said Lowes, trying to make himself heard over his brother.

“I felt like I had been riding around at a safe pace whereas this weekend we are working on settings instead of issues. We chipped away in the first two sessions, even though we had some problems with the throttle bodies.

“We used the hard tyre this morning and it felt as quick as yesterday. The engine braking took us another step and then we used the race tyre and it went even better. It felt good and because I did such a good lap on the race tyre, the qualifier was only enough for another tenth or so. We have got some setting to work out but the bike is better and I am quite quick.”
