Gary Johnson's TT 2018 diary: part two

We made some small changes to the Superbike for Wednesday's practice session and I set off with James Hillier and it felt really positive. The bike was definitely a lot better and I was enjoying riding round with James when, sadly, we came across Dan's incident.

The yellow flags were out at the conker trees so we slowed right down and, naturally, it's never nice to witness the aftermath of a crash. We got through steady and whilst we know the risks and what can happen, it's simply horrible to witness such scenes. It's a harsh realisation of the speeds of what we do around here and what can happen if things go wrong.

It's hard to see a friend in such a situation and my thoughts are with Dan's family and friends and everyone at Tyco BMW.

Thursday was a tough day for everyone but practice came round and we made a slight change to the rear of the Superbike which, unfortunately, had a negative effect on the handling. Glen (Richards) is in Australia but he's been having a look at the data, as we have here in the paddock, and we're going to make a change in the opposite direction for tonight's session which will, hopefully, put us in a good place for tomorrow's Superbike race.

I got two laps on the Superbike before switching to the Stocker but I was struggling to get it to turn in the way I wanted it to so we need to make some headway before Monday's race. We're going to make some decent changes though for another lap during tonight's practice.

The last lap of the night was on the 600 but there were a few yellow flags out, obviously through St Ninian's, so it was always going to be a steady lap and the bike seemed to be lacking a bit of grunt. It's been quite a frustrating week on the Triumph but I'm confident of making a greater fist of things during the races both in terms of having a better set-up and with my own pace.

We haven't managed another lap yet on the WK Lightweight but my dad, aka Turbo, and friend Carl have been beavering away and working flat out to have it ready for Saturday afternoon's session. We're on the back foot a bit and we need to get some laps in to sort the fuelling and the like out but there are sessions on Saturday and Monday so we'll hopefully get a good run then.
