Haslam undergoes successful surgery after Brands BSB crash

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam has undergone successful ankle surgery following his 170mph crash in the Brands Hatch MCE British Superbike finale.

Brake failure forced the Derbyshire rider to jump off his ZX-10RR at the super-fast Hawthorn Bend in the early part of the last race and suffered multiple fractures as he bounced across the gravel and into the Recticel fence.

Haslam was carried to the start/finish line by his crew to congratulate Shane Byrne on his sixth championship before being taken to hospital where surgeons found his ankle injury a lot more complicated than first thought.

“Leon had an operation on his ankle but unfortunately it turned out to be far more complicated. Not only was the ankle broken but all the ligaments and tendons had been severed from the bone so had to be re-attached,” said Haslam’s wife Oli.

“Mr Hahn, who performed the surgery, was very happy with the results and Leon should be home soon for rest and rehab.Thankfully, the wrist was a clean break so has on a normal cast.”
