'I'm worried when we win, we won't be asked back' - McWilliams

Team GB’s Phillip Island Classic leader Jeremy McWilliams says he is delighted that more big names like Troy Corser and Colin Edwards are joining up for the January spectacular and joked he is worried that when the Brits win it for a fourth time in a row, they might not be allowed back.

The Aussie and American teams bolstered their respective line-ups with some big names, and Team GB have of course had to draft in some superstars as well, such as Dan Linfoot, Lee Johnston and Michael Rutter.

While McWilliams’ team-mates could pose an upset and beat him to the individual honours, by winning the Ken Wootton Perpetual Trophy, the 53-year-old has welcomed the new recruits with open arms.

“I’m delighted to see more big names coming along,” McWilliams told bikesportnews.com. “It’s about time that we had a bit of a challenge. Roger Winfield has been hard at work agreeing contracts for some big British names to join Team GB.”

Since making his International Challenge debut in 2011, the Northern Irishman has always finished within the top three (overall). For McWilliams, does that mean anything to him or are they simply just numbers?

“I don’t like racing for fun. Racing is only fun if you win, or at worst get on the podium. The buzz comes back when you roll up on to that grid, as Phillip Island is a special place,” said the former MotoGP star.

bikesportnews.com also fired the question to McWilliams about what it would mean to him personally if he were to win the outright individual honours for a sixth time running and his response was that Team GB stick together.

“We know what it takes to win at this event. I’m just concerned that when we win it for a fourth time, we won’t be invited back,” he joked. Possibly…
