Imola WSBK: Camier to get engine boost ahead of qualifying

MV Agusta’s Leon Camier held on to a top five spot on day one of World Superbike free practice at Imola today and hopes a horsepower boost will help him qualify in the front couple of rows for the Italian double-header.

Camier’s time from the morning session was enough to carry him into a Superpole two slot as changes made for the second session didn’t work out how his team thought they might. A new engine in the morning will give him an extra couple of horsepower but there are electronics to dial into it beforehand.

“The second session didn’t work. The way we went with the bike didn’t feel right. It worked in some areas, little bit more stable, which is what I was looking for but I couldn’t change direction as well, it wasn’t as agile. We went back to the first setting right at the end and got one decent lap in. I could have been a tenth or two faster than this morning, but I made a mistake. I was a little bit frustrated but there isn’t much more to be had as the setting we came up with - it’s not quite the base setting - worked well from the start,” said Camier, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the track.

“We went longer and changed the gearing in order to try and get more power to the tarmac to stop the wheelie but that put more pressure on the front and I couldn’t push enough as I felt on the limit straightaway, so we will use what we had this morning.

“Tomorrow we have another engine, which should mean more power, but we have to change the electronics really quickly as wheelie is a big problem here. So we have to anticipate how that is going to work and then make the changes in 15 minutes. It’s a bit more power but higher up in the range so we will have a little flatspot before it kicks in. We ran it in Aragon and I think it is a more reliable verison.”
