Britain’s Sam Lowes has finished the second day of Moto2 testing at Jerez as the fastest man, staying on top of the timesheets through all the sessions and carrying a three-tenth lead at one point.

The Speed Up rider, who is running WP suspension this year alongside an aluminium swingarm, eventually saw his lead reduced to a tenth by Louis Salom in the last session but main rivals Tito Rabat and Johann Zarco were three and two tenths in arrears.

Lowes set his best time in the second session, going under the Moto2 pole record for the circuit. Axel Pons was a surprise in fifth place with Jonas Folger sixth and Sandro Cortese in seventh. Xavier Simeon was eighth, Alex Rins ninth and Takaaki Nakagami tenth. Last year’s runner-up Mika Kallio ended in 11th place and Alex Marquez, who replaced him at Marc VDS, has found some pace, ending in 12th and a second off Lowes’ pace.
