Jerez WorldSBK: Rea bags double win in Spain

Jonathan Rea has taken the double WorldSBK win in Spain this afternoon which has handed Kawasaki their third manufacturers’ championship in a row while a podium for Chaz Davies sees him draw level with Tom Sykes for second place in the points table.

In a race that was re-started after Davies and brother-in-law Eugene Laverty collided and fell at turn two, Rea made his way from ninth to second on lap one, passed Michael Van Der Mark at turn two on lap two and never looked back, setting a new lap record as he cruised away from the Yamahas and Ducatis.

The Castletown resident has equalled the win record of legend Troy Bayliss on 52 and now needs seven more to surpass Carl Fogarty and become the most successful WorldSBK rider in history.

The fight for the podium ended up between Davies and Aruba Ducati team-mate Marco Melandri. Davies made his way to second on lap five after starting from ninth on the grid. He had to pass both Alex Lowes and Melandri before putting a move on Van Der Mark.

Melandri tried to follow him but the Dutchman proved a much tougher prospect and the pair swapped paint and places, making errors and running wide before Melandri finally got the better of the Pata Yamaha man. Lowes picked up his pace as the laps clicked down and an error from Van Der Mark, running into the dirt, allowed Lowes a place to pass.

Davies wasn’t able to pull away from Melandri and the little Italian worked his way back to Davies’ rear wheel. The Welshman is very hard to pass on the brakes but Melandri managed into turn one with two laps to go and it looked like Davies didn’t want to make a scrap of it, setting for third.

Lowes cut his gap to Davies right down to six-tenths at the end of the race and said afterwards the hard front tyre he chose didn’t really work but he stayed ahead of Van Der Mark. Sykes also found a way past to take fifth place and keep himself level with Davies on points.

Xavi Fores won a race-long battle with Sylvain Guintoli for seventh place with Tati Mercado and Jordi Torres completing the top ten. A clearly frustrated Leon Camier came home in 12th.
