Jerez WSBK test: Guigliano heads Sykes on day two

Aruba Ducati’s Davide Giugliano went a second under the existing circuit best World Superbike laptime, held by Loris Baz, on the final day of testing at Jerez but he was held hard by the Kawasaki duo of Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea.

Giugliano, who used a Pirelli qualifier as did many of the other men, put in a 1’39.332 but then crashed and his track time was limited to just 40-odd laps while Sykes and Rea played catch-up.

It was the former champion was won the KRT battle, finishing a little under four tenths behind the Italian on a 1’39.614 while Rea was half a tenth further back. Chaz Davies, on the second Panigale, was fourth but suffered a crash at about the same time at Giugliano.

Leon Haslam recovered from yesterday’s disaster, where gremlins kept him in the garage almost solidly to set the fifth fastest time and end just under three-quarters of the second off the pace.

He was followed by fellow Briton and close friend Alex Lowes on the Crescent Suzuki and by the only Pata Honda rider on track today, Michael van der Mark; Guintoli was ruled out of the test due to yesterday’s early crash.

Series rookie Nico Terol (Althea Ducati) improved his performance today as he was only 1.4s slower than Giugliano’s super-quick lap time. Frenchman Randy De Puniet crashed out twice but managed to end up ninth, faster than Matteo Baiocco and Jordi Torres.
